July 28, 2000 Mr. Dean Massey Council President Pikes Peak Council, B.S.A. 525 E. Uintah Colorado Springs, CO 80903 Dear Sir: I am reluctantly returning the enclosed Eagle Scout Badge to you as a protest against the recently publicized anti-gay stance of the B.S.A. I earned this badge in the early 1940's as a member of Troop #1 at Cheyenne Mountain school in Colorado Springs. My scouting experience was a valuable and enjoyable part of my growing up, and I am very sad that such an experience might now not be available to all boys. I am retaining the small case in which the badge came to me and will let it contain a copy of this letter. This will allow my children and grandchildren know that I had earned the badge but also had learned enough over the years to do what I strongly feel is the right thing by returning it to you at this time. Sincerely, Wilson Y. Gateley 3201 W. Platte Ave. Colorado Springs, CO 80904 |
