1926
May 17: I was born to Sydney and Edna Gateley at McFadden, Carbon Co., WY.
1931
1937
Aug. 13: My sister, Mary Elizabeth (Betty), was injured by slipping over the Silver Cascade Falls in N. Cheyenne Canyon while on a picnic. She died at 0330 the next day. She was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs. [P.S. (2004): The 4-grave plot now holds Betty, her mother Edna and her grandparents Harry and Linnie York.]
1938
My '37-'38 6th grade report cards were all signed by my mother.
My mother and I spent some of the summer with my father in the Lander-Atlantic City region of Wyoming. He was probably engaged in some mining venture. I worked for a bit helping run some survey lines and became entranced with boysenberry jam
In the fall Dorothy Butcher (nowMarch, 1999Dorothy Ramsey, living in Loveland, CO) moved into our household at 1806 Cheyenne Blvd. as a foster child. She was a couple of years older than I and became a good friend of us all. I was into serious Boy Scouting.
1939
My '38-'39 7th grade report cards were all signed by my mother.
1940
Around this time my parents were divorced (my father was living in Montana, I think).
My mother visited the Gateley relatives in Alma (she and they remained good friends after the divorce. During this visit she became acquainted with Charlie Brandon, who was supervising the building of a new water plant for Alma. They probably met through music at a local bar, Charlie playing the violin and Edna the pianoan activity they continued up to her death.
My '39-'40 8th grade report cards were all signed by my grandmother Linnie York, so I was presumably staying with the grandparents.
During the summer my mother stayed with Charlie Brandon in Estes Park where he was constructing a water plant. I stayed with them for at least some of the summer and, among other things, learned to play the guitar, the three of us having frequent musical sessions.
In the fall my mother and I lived in a small rented house at 1628 Cheyenne Road. The house at 1806 Cheyenne Blvd. had been sold for taxes.
1941
My second '40-'41 9th grade report card was signed by my mother (we were apparently still living at 1628 Cheyenne Road).
During the summer she and I lived with Charlie Brandon in Lakewood, Colorado, where he was involved in the construction of the Remington Arms plant in Lakewood. (This plant was later converted into the Denver Federal Center.)
In the fall I lived with my grandparents at 1812 Willow Circle in Colorado Springs. My mother and Charlie moved to Salt Lake City on a different construction job (I went there during Christmas vacation, taking the D&RG Prospector train.)
1942
My second '41-'42 10th grade report card was signed by my grandmother.
In the spring my mother and Charlie moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where he was involved in another construction job. During the summer I lived with them and was even gainfully employed on the same job. I returned to live with my grandparents at the end of the summer and remained with them until I left for the Navy in 1944 (at some point they purchased and moved to the house next door at 1810 Willow Circle).
1943
On January 28th my mother died at age 46 in Lawrence, apparently of complications related to intestinal scarring from a hysterectomy done at some earlier date (possibly in Fairplay in the early '30s). She was buried under the name of Edna May Brandon in Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs next to my sister. (She had never actually married Charlie because he had been unable to obtain a divorce from his wife.)
In the summer I stayed with my father in Alma. He had married Hazel Singleton, the widow of the town banker. Her son Millard and I worked for my father, who was engaged in various mining venturesunfortunately, none successful. At the end of the summer, I worked for a couple of weeks with Charlie Brandon doing some logging in the Arkansas Valley near Granitethe first and only time I ever drove a Caterpillar tractor! (I believe this was the last time I ever saw Charlie.)
1944
Jun 7: I graduated from Cheyenne Mt. High School in Colorado Springs which I had attended for thirteen years (including kindergarten). My second '43-'44 12th grade report card was signed by my grandmother.
Sep 8: I entered active duty in the U. S. Navy (I had enlisted on May 3) and was sent to boot camp at the Great Lakes Training Station near Chicago. While there, I had an appendectomy.
December: I finished boot camp and on my leave returned to Colorado Springs for a brief visit. On the trip back to Chicago I paid a quick visit to Katherine Ogden, who was attending school at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.
1945
I attended electronics schools: 4 weeks at Chicago, 12 weeks at Gulfport, Miss., and 27 weeks at Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. I was then assigned to the Naval Repair Depot in San Diego and then to the repair ship USS Cadmus (AR-14) which was being commissioned in Tampa, Florida. After recovering from the mumps, I and the Cadmus took a round trip shakedown cruise to Norfolk, Virginia; and I was finally discharged at Jacksonville, Florida, on July 8, 1946, with the rating of Electronics Technician's Mate Second Class, V-6, USNR.
1946
Following the discharge, I hitchhiked via Washington, D. C., to upstate New York where I visited Katherine Ogden, with whom I had conducted an increasingly friendly correspondence while in the Navy. From there I returned to Colorado Springs and lived with my grandparents, Harry and Linnie York
September: I enrolled in Colorado College, and Katherine Ogden decided to be a college dropout and went to Colorado Springs. The friendship continued to grow.
Nov 30: I was married to Katherine Gertrude Ogden at Alma, Park Co., CO, at the home of my Aunt Mary Gately. We lived in a motel on West Colorado Ave. in Colorado Springs until the Christmas vacation, when we took the bus and visited her family in Rochester, New York. After returning to Colorado Springs we moved into a small apartment at 4 Winfield Ave. where we lived until June, 1947.
1947
June - August: For the summer we moved to Alma, Colorado, where I worked for my father, who, at the end of the summer, gave us a Ford Model A sedan (the Hoopey) and a kitten (Gizmo). We lived at 29 Ramona Ave. in Colorado Springs where Gizmo died (we buried her in North Cheyenne Canyon) and our first son, Edward York, was born on December 9th (the Hoopey failed us at that critical moment - it was very cold - and we had to resort to a taxi to get Kith to the hospital).
1948
February: I obtained a part-time job as a busboy (and later as a waiter) at the Broadmoor Hotel and, as such, was permitted to move into a brand new employee apartment near the hotel (at Apt. 15, Hazel Ave. - luxury!!!) where we stayed until September when a Quonset hut at 110 Tigertown on the Colorado College campus became available. While at the Broadmoor, the Hoopey was replaced by a Cushman motor scooter with a sidecar, a vehicle purchased with the tips I received as a waiter and which served us well until graduation from CC in June, 1949.
1983
August: Pax (Kyle's dog) put down.
1985
August: Ned & Barb moved to Denver.
1996
November 26: Our 50th Wedding Anniversary: the kids all came
2000
July 28: I returned my Boy Scout Eagle Badge which I had earned in the early 1940s. At that time I was a member of Scout Troop 34 and a student at Cheyenne Mountain School in Colorado Springs.

Note: 6/12/01; regarding Barbara Frick Gateley's Family:
I recently ran across in some unknown reference a comment regarding Charles Shedd who lived in Frisco, CO. Shedd is Barbara Frick Gateley's mother's family name. I've asked her about this but have had no positive response. The comment--from page 11 of something--read:
Ohio-born lumber yard owner was Charles. F. Shedd; born 23 June 1830 in Mt. Gilliad, Morrow Co., Ohio, to Henry Shedd and Mary Gerrish.
