Betty's Baby Book
I -- Bill Gateley -- am Betty's brother and ran across this book in October, 2002,
and immediately thought it should be part of the OGW. The notes for some of the pages
came from other places in the OGW and from my own memory of things seen and heard.
I hope you will enjoy it. (Click on the thumbnails for a full-screen view.)
* The Engle family lived just north of the Colorado House. George Engle was a banker and his daughter Elizabeth was a schoolmate of
Edna York (Betty's mother) . George once lost the combination for a safe, but Harry York ( Edna's father) had very sensitive fingers
and managed to open it.
** The "B. B. Tex." is "Burkburnett, Texas" where Sidney (Edna's father) was working as a blacksmith. How and why he got there is a mystery
(Burkburnett is close to the Oklahoma border about 15 miles north of Wichita Falls, Texas).
*** "G-G Mother Peabody is Linnie's mother Almeda Peabody; G&G York are Harry and Linnie York; Grandma G. is Etta Gateley;
Aunt Mary York is ???;
Aunt Vic & Cliff Peabody are Linnie's sister-in law and brother; Aunt Mary is Sidney's sister;
* The family is in Breckenridge. The two top photos were taken in the front yard of the York's house on French Street. The top one clearly shows a church in the background. In 1879 this church was built by and later named for Father John Lewis Dyer (who is Kith's second cousin, three times removed). The church was later removed to a different location and remains an important landmark today.
** The church also appears in the background in the lower right corner of this photo which shows Betty with her Grandfather York on the back porch of the York home.
* 1927: The family ( including one-year old me) is now living in Fairplay. Within two years, Edna and her two children will have moved to
Colorado Springs although Sidney will continue to live mostly in Park County, engaged in various mining activities, until his death in 1958.
