The Family of Joseph & Leveretta GATELEY |
|
Husband: Joseph Hardin GATELEY also known as: Gately, Gaitly, Gatly
Buried in the Fairplay Cemetery in Fairplay, Park
Co., CO |
Note: references to Eddyville, Wapello Co., IA, probably refer to Mahaska Co. where the Gateley ferry across the Des Moines river was located, some 7 miles northwest of Eddyville.
1863 Aug 18: He enlisted in the 4th Independent Battery of the Iowa Light Artillery. Mustered in at Davenport, IA, on 23 Nov 1863 and was discharged from the same place on 14 Jul 1865.
1874? Moved to Colorado, probably with his brothers Richard and William, where they went into the lumbering business in the Black Forest, NE of Colorado Springs.
1882 Mar (May?) 15: A William J. Gateley (age 25) married Lizzie Lecort (age 19) in Colorado Springs. He probably was Joseph's brother.
1885: The Colorado Census showed Luther Gateley (age 57), wife Caroline (age 54), son Elmer N. (age 28) and daughters Kate E. (age 20) and Nettie M. (age 13) living in El Paso County. Both Luther and Elmer were farmers, and Luther rented the farm. The census data indicates that Luther was certainly Joseph's brother.
1887 Apr 28: He married Leveretta Miller "Etta" Wilson (age 20) at Eastonville. The marriage was performed by the Rev. S. E. Taylor, a minister from Monument.
1889 Eastonville Hotel, Gately, Jos., Prop. [1889 Colorado Business Directory]; (This is the year that Etta's father, John Frank Wilson, died).
1890: Gately, Jos., hotel. [1890 Colorado Business Directory]
1895: The family moved to Rifle, Colorado, and settled on West Rifle Creek.
After the family moved to Rifle, Grace eventually married Jesse Wells. The book Rifle Shots (a history of Rifle) included the following about his family:
|
"We are first introduced to this family in Alma when William Wurts married the young widow, Mary Wells, and from then on assumed the role of step-father to her three year old son, Jesse Wells. In 1884 they moved over the mountain to Gypsum. There was a wagon train of family that came over Battlement Mountain that included: a brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Archibald Wurts, and a brother-in-law, Dan Mullen. William and Mary had already started having their large family of 12children. Alta and Hattie had been born in Alma, Warren in Gypsum and Aaron at Cottonwood Pass where his father was employed on construction work on the Cottonwood Pass road. They all came to Rifle in 1888. The Archie Wurts family chose land high on Graham Mesa. The William Wurts and Dan Mullens staked their claims on West Rifle Creek. Later these ranches were bought by young Jesse Wells and he added to them the Herman Heinze and Malby ranches to own a 600 acre spread which he continued to farm for over twenty years before selling them to come into Rifle to go into the theatre business." |
