Hi, Karen: My

married to Hester Ann MOORE who died a few months after William (we have
a copy of her obituary). William
was a Methodist minister, but that is about all we know of him, so any
information about him that you could find would be most appreciated (we
would of course be happy to pay any charges you might incur). The
Montgomery
County Old Settlers
link on your site showed:
MIKELS, Joel, formerly of
Darlington, Dec 3, 1828, NC, 87, Jan 13, 1916 (Mexican War Soldier)
Joel was a bit young to
be William's father but may have been a brother, etc.
Thanks,

Do you know his bros/sisters? There is a William Michaels age 18 Ind
Jane 16 Ind Thomas 10 Ind Elijah 8 Ind with Elizabeth Michaels 41 b. Ky, Franklin Twp, 1850 census. If he had a bro. Elijah and Thomas and
sister Jane, this is likely him. Perhaps a better possibility is
Franklin Twp Sarah Michaels age 40 b Ky; Nancy A 16 Ind; William 14 Ind;
James R 12 Ind; Mary J 8 Ind; Franklin 5 Mo. Sylvia E. 2 Ind.
1881 HW Beckwith History, Franklin Twp, p 533 -- (Religious Sects) First
methodist preachers -- Among these we have the pleasure to mention Rev.
William R. Mikels of North Indiana conference. -- THe Free Will
Baptist church was formed in Aug 1833 in the cabin home of William
Mikles, 3 mi. south of E. of where Darlington now stands, at the place
known as Center Grove. The families who enlisted in this work were
William Mikles and family, Thomas Mikles and family, Joal Mikles and
family, Abraham Naylor and wife....this society was constituted a church
by the ministration of Rev. J B Austin and Rev. Swim. These ministers
were probably the first of the denomination who preached within the
bounds of this township. At the same meeting (AUg 1833) when the church
was organized, William Mikles was ordained minister of the church and
served in this capacity for several years. This society never build a
house for worship; they met in private cabins of the members until the
Mikles schoolhouse was built, when they removed their services to this
place, which soon became known as the Baptist center for this part of
Mont. Co.

Karen Zach just sent me some stuff (which you
probably have) which included:

[This is the
wrong surname spelling and wrong denomination, so is almost certainly
not my William but may be yours.]

6/27:
Bill,
What a wonderful surprise to hear from you. William R. Mikels is a
cousin to my great-great-great grandfather........he was indeed a
Methodist minister in this area...also married my
great-great-great-grandparents Dec. 1860 in Tippecanoe County, IN which
is one county north of Montgomery County. William R. Mikels married many
in both counties. I did in fact find a sister of William R. Mikels in
Boone County, IN.......Nancy A. born 9-12-1833 married W. H. Beck June
9, 1855.Nancy died June 30, 1903.
Here's the interesting part............Beck's were members of the Free
Will Baptist Church.........I have all the information that Karen Zach
sent you......given to me by Harold Mikels from Missouri....I have a
complete copy of the minutes of the Free Will Baptist Church from 1833
to 1848.........the thing that stumps me is how the spelling of Mikels
was once again changed..........in Karen's case from Mikels to Mikles????
I believe we are probably all descendants of these people.
William R. Mikels was also co executor of my great-great-great
grandfathers Will along with my great-great-great grandmother.
I'll check for more info on your William in my research and let you know
what I find.I may have a copy of their marriage, although I'm not real
sure. I do know I have his signature on many of the marriage records I
have collected.
Thanks for the info, please give Karen Zach my e-mail address , maybe
you would give me her e-mail address?

Bill,
Found some more information in my research............William R. Mikels
is buried in Masonic Cemetery.....Union Township....Montgomery County,
IN...side by side with wife Hester.
I have also found in biographical sketches from Montgomery County an
interesting article.......that follows:
Rev. Franklin Mikels, formerly pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church
at Stockwell, now a member of the drug firm of Jay & Mikels, is a
native of Missouri, born in Daviess County, October 8, 1844, a son of
Rev. William Mikels, now deceased, who for many years was a Missionary
Baptist minister in Montgomery County, Indiana, and vicinity, he having
settled in Montgomery County in 1845. Franklin was reared on the home
farm to agricultural pursuits, and was educated in the academy at
Thornton, Indiana, and the Northwestern University and Garrett Biblical
Institute, at Evanston, Illinois. He also took a regular course of study
in the Methodist Episcopal Conference, graduating in 1873. He engaged in
the regular work of the ministry in 1869, on the Yountsville Circuit, in
Montgomery County, in the Northwestern Methodist Episcopal Conference,
and has since been a member of the conference. He became pastor of the
Stockwell congregation in 1884, which position he held until 1887, a
period of three years, and in his pastoral relations here he has been
eminently successful. During the winter of 1886-1887..167 souls were
added to the church. Mr. Mikels was united in marriage, Dec. 19, 1866,
to Miss Mary A. Ross, a daughter of Armstrong Ross, of Stockwell. Of the
three children born to them two are living, named William A. and Lena B.
Franklin, the second child, is deceased. In September, 1887, Mr. Mikels
bought a half interest in the drug store of Manuel Jay, when the firm of
Jay & Mikels was formed. Their stock consists of drugs, medicines,
notions, stationery, school books and school supplies, and the firm is
doing a large business. Mr. Mikels is a member of both the Odd Fellow
and Masonic orders. He is the owner of eighty acres of choice land two
miles west of Stockwell. He is an honored and respected citizen, held in
high esteem by all who know him.
What is so interesting is that Franklin is the son of William! I believe
he is possibly a brother to William Riley Mikels. Did you also notice
that William the father was Baptist????? The information about the Free
Will Baptist church came to me from Harold Mikels from Missouri! I am quite certain that these people are
OUR Mikels family.
To add to all this information my great grandfathers name was George
Riley Mikels....( do you remember that I told you that William Riley
Mikels married my great great grandparents? Thomas J. Mikels and Martha
Martin. William Riley also was executor of my great great grandfather
Thomas J. Mikels Will and they were cousins!!) also I have an eight year
old nephew named Keifer Riley Mikels after his great great grandfather
George Riley. Whew!
Now with all this information and looking back on my transcribed copy of
the minutes of the Free Will Baptist Church, which by the way came to me
from Daviess County, Missouri where several of our Mikels moved onto in
the early 1830s leaving me with the idea that we must be related to
these people.
Tell me what you think..
Kim Mikels

William R. Mikels was a Methodist minister for
58 years and I believe he and Hester had a son William R.
Mikels........born in 1870 and died in 1906. William R. Mikels Jr. was
also a Minister?
