Wednesday evening about seven o'clock Miss Sarah Brown,
daughter of Mrs. Thomas York, was drowned in the Smoky Hill River, near
the farm of George Taylor. Accompanied by a Mrs. Wilson and several
children, she went in the river bathing, but the treacherous sand had
moved off and the shallow place they were accustomed to had become a
great hole. The children were rescued without trouble, but Mrs. Wilson
was so near drowned that she suffered greatly. Mrs. George Taylor took
great risks in her efforts to save the parties. The body of Miss Brown
was found noon Thursday on a sand bar, a mile and a half below where she
was drowned. Mrs. Wilson was greatly improved Friday morning. |
