January 1951
Vigorously he seeks the vital milk,
Pulls at the warm full breast with hungry mouth.
A breathing thing of blankness, nothing his but -
No thought of past or future; he could be
Blotted from the earth and not have known .
But the unfathomable, which is life,
Sends to his mouth the urge to suck
And though this urge he will exceed the now
To be humanity.
