Fall 1957

Renunciation

Snow fell on my heart;
   I did not know,
so hushed, so softly white
  that fall of snow.

So hushed, so softly white
  it melted silently,
for hearts when loved are warm
  against mortality.

Snow fell on my heart,
  melted, and was gone
but love may be too kind
  and coldness lingers on.
